Chamber Endorses Downtown Safety Cameras

The Columbia Chamber of Commerce is proud to support the downtown safety camera initiative, which is set to appear on the April 6 ballot. This decision was reached after thoughtful consideration and months of thorough discussion.

Last fall, the Columbia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors approved a recommendation from the Government Affairs Committee encouraging members of the city council to revisit the issue of downtown safety cameras that had been previously denied. That request was denied. A group of concerned citizens have since acquired the necessary signatures and have presented a petition to the city council to allow the citizens of Columbia to vote on the issue at the April election. On Friday, January 15, 2010 the Chamber Board of Directors voted to support the downtown safety camera ballot initiative based on the former recommendation from the Government Affairs Committee.

“Public safety must be a priority for our community,” said Byron Hill, Chair of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. “The Chamber is pleased to endorse the use of safety cameras downtown and urges the citizens of Columbia to vote ‘Yes’ on April 6th.”

Out of concern for the safety for our residents, visitors and our business community, the Columbia Chamber of Commerce endorses this initiative as a tool to fight crime. We encourage you to show your support by voting yes on April 6.
