Chamber Endorses School Bond Issue Proposal and City Charter Amendments

The Columbia Chamber of Commerce voiced its support for the 2010 Columbia Public Schools Bond Issue Proposal and the Home Rule City Charter Amendments, which are set to appear on the April 6 ballot. These decisions were reached after thoughtful consideration and discussion.

Columbia Public Schools Superintendent Chris Belcher spoke to both the Education and Government Affairs Committees on February 9 and March 11, respectively. The Education Committee voted in support of the Columbia Public Schools Bond Issue Proposal, also sending a recommendation to the Government Affairs Committee. The Government Affairs Committee considered this recommendation and also voted to support the proposal. Additionally, the Government Affairs Committee sent a recommendation of support to the Board of Directors. On Friday, March 19, the Board considered this recommendation and after discussion voted to endorse the 2010 school bond issue.

In order to provide our students with adequate facilities in which to learn and to provide the necessary tools for students to be successful, the Columbia Chamber of Commerce endorses the 2010 Columbia Public Schools Bond Issue Proposal as an opportunity to provide for the future of Columbia Public Schools. We encourage you to show your support by voting yes on April 6.

On March 11, the Government Affairs Committee heard a presentation from City Manager Bill Watkins on the City Charter Amendments. Per Mr. Watkins’ presentation and handout: “On April 6, 2010, Columbia voters will have an opportunity to amend the City’s Home Rule Charter to enhance local government efficiency. Five ‘housekeeping’ amendments relating to City staffing, finance and elections are proposed. Voters may vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on any or all amendments. A simple majority of qualified electors voting in the April 6 election is required to pass any of the proposed amendments.” After time for questions and discussion, the committee voted to support all amendments and sent a recommendation to the Board for endorsement. The Board, also after thorough discussion and consideration, voted to support and endorse the amendments.

These Amendments are tools to increase efficiency and improve city government. In addition to the School Bond Issue Proposal, we also encourage you to show your support of the Amendments by voting yes on April 6.
