Introducing EPIC's
New Community Involvement Group!
Hello fellow EPIC
members...We are pleased to introduce you to our new Community Involvement arm of EPIC! Our hope is to offer both education and awareness of local non profit, charity, city and Chamber opportunities here in Columbia.
Further, this quarterly e-newsletter will serve as the platform in which to notify you of these opportunities. Each quarter we will also highlight one emerging professional who is making a difference in our local community and twice a year we will organize group volunteer events.
With that being said, our first Community Involvement volunteer event is April
24 for the city-wide Cleanup Columbia! If you can help volunteer for a couple of hours on Saturday April
24 with other EPIC members, please email Erin Teeple at erin.teeple@williamwoods.edu
soon so we can know how many people to expect.
We are excited for what the future holds and let's continue to make a difference here in Columbia!
Sincerely,
Chris Lunn

5 Ways Volunteering Can Build Your Career
Submitted
by Carolyn Sullivan, New Chapter Coaching, LLC
1. Volunteering provides you with opportunities to connect with Columbia’s movers and
shakers. Every Columbia leader you know has a resume filled with community service. When you volunteer, you rub elbows with, working alongside, and impress Columbia’s biggest and best.
2. Volunteering provides you with opportunities to
stretch your stuff! In the friendly, low-risk environment created for volunteers, you can build your skills and your resume; why not build your community as you do?
3. Volunteering provides you with opportunities to
explore what you want to do next with your career. Many of us are in search of meaningful work, but are uncertain what that work looks like. We all have questions about our abilities and few of us can afford to make a career change without testing the waters first. So find a volunteer opportunity that will enable you to answer some of your burning career-related questions.
4. Volunteering provides you with opportunities to
generate tangible, transformative results as part of a
team. Being able to deliver as part of a team is a vital skill in today’s workplace. So instead of watching Extreme Makeover on television, join the next project to renovate a house and transform a life right here in Columbia.
5. Volunteering provides you with real world opportunities to
enhance your leadership skills. As you serve the community, you’ll be learning how to lead from Columbia’s best leaders. In many nonprofits, your competency and commitment will be rewarded with quick promotions up a short leadership ladder.
